The Leanne Gaffney trained Azara ran out a comfortable winner in the first on Launceston Oaks day picking up the prized Tasbred bonus in the process.
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the daughter of Squamosa however, with the filly encountering plenty of misadventure as a younger horse, hence the late season debut as a 3yo filly.
The purchase of Star Thoroughbreds/Randwick Bloodstock from the Motree Thoroughbreds draft the 2019 Tasmanian Magic Millions sale for just 20k appears to be a shrewd investment.
Azara is the first foal of handy sprinting mare “Lustica” who raced in the famous purple and white colours of Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds.
This makes “Lustica” a half sister to current star 2yo “Turk Warrior” who has taken all before him this season in going through the feature 2yo races undefeated.
Their yearling half brother was purchased through the Grenville draft this year (Zululand x Ehor) by Lindsay Park Racing for 100k.
Like the family, Azara appears to have plenty more to offer and we look forward to seeing her return to the races on March 24 at Launceston.
Fortunately we should have little problem in continuing to catch some great shots of Azara in action with our very own amazing photographer and good friend Clare Pettit in the ownership group!
