Talented apprentice Kyle Maskiell has been on fire at Devonport in recent weeks however he has the tenacious spirit of Up Wind to thank for the final leg of yesterdays four-timer after setting the Leanne Gaffney trained gelding a herculean task under the 60kg (after the claim).

After being caught wide passing the post the first time Maskiell elected to roll forward however rival jockeys were giving no favours to the heavily backed even money chance, forcing the son of Needs Further to face the breeze three wide and working before eventually crossing down to sit outside the leader passing the 800m mark.

Despite taking over turning for home Up Wind appeared a sitting shot at the furlong with the lime green and purple silks of the Paul & Elizabeth Geard owned Geegees looming ominously on either side.

It was perhaps at this point where Maskiell showed his class, swapping the stick into his left hand to ask his mount for one more effort with the gallant Up Wind obliging to make it three wins from his past four starts and importantly four from eight on the tapeta surface.

Handled to perfection thus far, trainer Leanne Gaffney now plans to give the progressive stayer a well earned freshen up before setting her sights on the Golden Mile/Devonport Cup double over the summer carnival.

Hailing from the family of recently retired crowd favourite “Speed Force” (twice Devonport Cups placed) connections will be hoping the Motree Bred galloper can go one better in 2021.
